Collaboration with Shanghai Jiao Tong University

The University of Oxford and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) have established a long-standing research collaboration focused on developing practical technologies for carbon dioxide capture. Led by Professor Dermot O’Hare at Oxford and Associate Professor Xuancan Zhu at SJTU, the partnership combines Oxford’s expertise in advanced materials chemistry with SJTU’s strengths in process engineering, scale-up and pilot testing.

A major focus is the development of adaptable layered double hydroxide (LDH) materials for capturing CO₂ from industrial gases, indoor air and directly from the atmosphere. The research has progressed from fundamental materials design to structured adsorbents, scalable production and pilot-scale systems, demonstrating a pathway from laboratory discovery towards real-world carbon-capture applications.

The next stage of the collaboration will test these technologies under realistic operating conditions and explore their use in industrial flue-gas capture, direct air capture, building air management, and the supply of concentrated CO₂ for storage or utilisation.
