‘The O’Hare Research Group is a friendly & dynamic team inorganic Chemists focused on Green Chemistry & closing loops in the Chemical Circular Economy’
Professor Dermot O’Hare and his senior staff lead a team of about thirty Inorganic Chemists working together to find solutions to global problems.
The research interests of the group can be grouped into four broad themes:
- Chemical Circular Economy
- Functional Hybrid Materials
- Carbon dioxide Utilisation
- Functional Polyolefins
- Green Chemistry

The group is based in the modern facilities of the Chemistry Research Laboratory in Oxford’s central science area and enjoys access to state of the art equipment and analytical techniques.
The group meets weekly through the year and students have the chance to present their research to the group on a termly basis and benefit from the insights of the team. Students have experienced mentors within the group they see most days and are also encouraged to take on an area of responsibility within the team when they have settled in. The group has been award the The Bronze LEAF Sustainability Award and works hard to be environmentally responsible.
Prof. O’ Hare encourages a collaborative and approachable atmosphere, meeting students individually each term and being available to offer guidance at other times as needed.
The O’Hare group have regular informal social activities in Oxford organised by the group’s social secretary - as well as a formal Christmas Dinner (generally at Balliol College), summer barbeque and other ad hoc events.
The Chemistry Department fosters a collaborative and entrepreneurial atmosphere - hosting the annual Jamie Ferguson Awards for Innovation and has strong links with Oxford University Innovation and Oxford Science Enterprises
